    Responsibilities

    Axalta Coating Systems is seeking an experienced Polymer Chemist with expertise in the synthesis and characterization of polymers. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the polymerization of acrylics and/or synthesis of polyurethanes. The successful candidate will have at least seven (7) years prior industrial experience, and will join Axalta’s Global Innovation Center (GIC) in Philadelphia, PA. The GIC group develops high performance coatings for the Transportation, Refinish, and General Industrial markets.


    In addition to a strong background in the synthesis of acrylics or polyurethanes, the candidate should have an understanding of structure-property relationships of polymers, and polymer physics. Additional requirements include familiarity with modern polymer characterization techniques, including both microscopic and macroscopic characterization methodologies.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Synthesis of new polymers for use in advanced coatings.
    • Rational design of polymer architectures to achieve targeted properties.
    • Characterization of polymer microstructure. 
    • Characterization of macroscopic properties, including thermal, rheological, and mechanical.
    • Correlation of polymer structure with observed properties. 
    • Collaborate with a multi-faceted, global team in the development of novel coating systems for key markets. 
    • Work with multiple functions within the organization to drive novel coating systems to commercialization. 
    • Develop intellectual property protection for key innovations.
    • Supervise associate investigator(s), organize work flow, including setting and meeting key deadlines.
    • Provide technical mentorship to junior level colleagues.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • PhD in Organic/Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Materials Science.
    • A minimum of seven (7) years prior industrial experience, including experience with the synthesis of acrylics or polyurethanes.
    • Demonstrated ability to work and contribute in a team environment.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence peers.
