    Role Summary


    The Color Scientist develops and implements color technology for internal and external color operations largely in support of Axalta’s automotive coatings business.  The Color Scientist works closely with R&D and resources in marketing, manufacturing, color formula development and information technology to identify organization needs and develop color technical solutions. 


    The Color Scientist is responsible for all stages of color technology development and implementation including identifying client requirements, innovation, theoretical or experimental development, validation, software function definition, user implementation, training and technical support.  The Color Scientist participates in and will eventually lead project teams of color technology users and providers. 


    Technology delivery of Color for internal uses is primarily done through the Axalta Color System software.  This position will work closely with global users of these systems as well as resources in the Color Science group and Color IT System support team and software, instrument or imaging suppliers to ensure the data is analyzed to provide valid technical/business actions.


    Key Responsibilities:


    • Employ technical skills in optical measurement, empirical modeling, algorithm development, visual psychophysics, color imaging and data analysis to continuously improve our color models and tools. 
    • Network with global business, marketing, manufacturing, technology and information technology personnel and participate in working teams of Global Color management.
    • Participate in or lead projects effectively.  Use influence across multiple groups in use and leveraging of in-house and new technology. Develop and deliver projects that meet the needs of R&D, Engineering, and customer requirements.
    • Network with external resources in academia, professional societies, suppliers and customers to gather and apply new data analysis methods which can be practically utilized in meeting technical and business objectives. 


    Specific Technical Requirements:


    • MS or PhD degree in Color Science, or MS or PhD in Science/Engineering with 5+ years industry experience in optical tools and measurements.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform efficient experiments to identify issues, develop relationships and validate results using process/product variables in relation to visual or optical measurement responses, and to interpret, analyze and apply numerical color and appearance measurement.
    • Experience with theoretical and empirical modeling, statistics, computer systems development and process control. 
    • Experience with visual experiments strongly preferred.

    • Direct Reports: Assigns work to and manages performance of technicians.

    • 7+ years’ experience of progressive work experience in high volume, global organization
    • Experience implementing best practices and improvements.
