    Responsibilities

    Axalta Coating Systems is seeking a Physical Organic Chemist with a strong background in reaction mechanisms and chemical kinetics.   The candidate should also have expertise in non-covalent interactions and should have a firm grasp of modern analytical methods. This role will involve the conversion of chemical species to higher molecular weight polymer systems, while in the form of an organic film or coating.   The final coating may contain additional organic and/or inorganic ingredients, creating a mixture of chemical species with complex interactions. The tools of physical organic chemistry, in conjunction with solid-state characterization techniques, will be used to connect microscopic structure to macroscopic properties.  

    The successful candidate will join Axalta’s Global Innovation Center (GIC) in Philadelphia, PA. The GIC group develops high performance coatings for the Transportation, Refinish, and General Industrial markets.

    Responsibilities

    • Study and interpret complex chemical transformations.
    • Develop understanding of how environmental conditions affect transformations.
    • Rational design of molecular and polymer architectures to achieve targeted properties.
    • Characterization of molecular, oligomeric, and polymer microstructure.
    • Characterization of macroscopic properties, including thermal, rheological, and mechanical.
    • Correlation of polymer structure with observed properties.
    • Collaborate with a multi-faceted, global team in the development of novel coating systems for key markets.
    • Work with multiple functions within the organization to drive novel coating systems to commercialization.
    • Develop intellectual property protection for key innovations.
    • Supervise associate investigator(s), organize work flow, including setting and meeting key deadlines.

    • Demonstrated ability to work and contribute in a team environment.
    • Strong intellectual curiosity combined with results-driven approach.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills.
